The PhD in Economics at LUISS Guido Carli
The PhD in Economics at LUISS Guido Carli is a four-year program providing advanced education in all the main areas of economics. It is aimed at training international economists capable of contributing to the advancement of knowledge and capable of expanding the frontiers of research in economic disciplines.
The program requires full-time attendance and is taught entirely in English. It is designed to give students the ability to understand and solve a broad spectrum of economic problems and to provide up-to-date training in analytical, empirical and quantitative techniques.
Students acquire the necessary skills to undertake both academic and professional careers, in universities, international research institutions, public authorities, central banks, consulting and financial institutions.
In the first year students take a series of advanced courses in Applied Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics and Finance. These courses are chosen from list of second-year RoME courses. Students combine these courses with advanced PhD courses of LUISS. Part of the second year is spent taking additional PhD courses. During rest of the second year and, third and fourth years students work on writing their Doctoral Dissertation and present their work in internal seminars, while attending seminars or “reading groups” at LUISS or at EIEF.
LUISS has reached an agreement with the Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance (EIEF), whereby students enrolled in their first and second years of the LUISS PhD program can benefit from the teaching activity (formal courses and advising) and facilities provided at EIEF. The latter is a Research Institute sponsored by the Bank of Italy located near the LUISS campus. The academic staff at EIEF is highly rated within the international academic profession.
Junior assistant professors in the LUISS PhD program and at EIEF are recruited on the American job market and are among the best researchers coming from the top graduate programs across the world.
